Getting started with Heat Transfer Vinyl

Welcome to the exciting world of textile personalization! Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV), also known as iron-on vinyl, is a material used to create high-quality, professional-looking designs on fabric. This guide provides new users with all the essential steps, tips, and product details you need to succeed with HTV.

The HTV Process: A Quick Start Guide

Working with HTV involves a few key steps, regardless of the specific type of vinyl you choose.

1. Design & Cut (Mirror Image is Key!)

  • Design: Create or select your graphic.
  • Cutting: Use an electronic cutting machine (plotter) to cut your design into the HTV.
  • Crucial Step: You must mirror your image/text before cutting. HTV is cut on the dull side (the adhesive layer), and the clear, glossy side is the carrier sheet.

    2. Weeding (Removing Excess)
  • Weeding: Use a specialized tool, like a weeding tool or a craft knife, to carefully remove all the excess HTV material from around and inside your design.
  • Result: Only your final design should remain on the clear, sticky carrier sheet.

    3. Pressing (Applying Heat)
  • Pre-press: Lay your garment on the heat press and press it briefly (e.g., 3-5 seconds) to remove moisture and wrinkles.
  • Position: Place your HTV design on the garment with the clear carrier sheet facing up (this is why you mirrored the design!).
  • Press: Apply heat and pressure according to the specific HTV instructions. A heat press is highly recommended for consistent results.

    4. Peeling the Carrier Sheet
  • Hot Peel, Warm Peel, or Cold Peel: Carefully check the instructions for your specific vinyl to see if you should peel the carrier sheet immediately while hot, while slightly warm, or wait until it is completely cool. Peeling at the wrong time can ruin your design!
