The DTF Pro-Tips You Need to Know
1. Invest In The Right Tools
The biggest printing headaches often come from low-quality gear. Investing in high-quality, reliable equipment is the first step to successful, consistent DTF printing. At TheMagicTouch, we only stock reliable, tested equipment. Prioritize trusted brands for your printer, powder shaker, and heat press.
2. Humidity Is Very Important
Due to the absorbent nature of the DTF coating, it is extremely susceptible to humidity and moisture. High humidity can cause prints to become sticky or powder to clump, leading to poor transfers. We recommend investing in a humidity reader to ensure the conditions are kept between 35% – 65%.
3. Storing Your Film
Moisture can dramatically affect how the film performs. If your film absorbs moisture, it can lead to poor ink adhesion and inconsistent powder application. We recommend that rolls and sheets are stored in their original packaging and sealed between uses. Always store your film away from walls and off the floor to prevent moisture wicking.
4. ‘Low and Slow’ Curing
The secret to perfectly melted adhesive is ‘low and slow’. Curing your prints and adhesive powder is more effective at a lower temperature with a longer press time. The recommended curing temperature is 100−120
∘
C. The time will vary depending on the size of your design and the thickness of the ink laydown.
5. Achieve The ‘Orange Peel’ Cure
During curing, you need to achieve an ‘orange peel’ effect. This is when the cured adhesive powder looks glossy with a bumpy, textured effect that resembles the outer skin of an orange! This texture indicates the adhesive is properly melted and ready to bond perfectly with the fabric.
6. Signs That You Need To Adjust Your Cure Settings
Watch out for these visual cues to fine-tune your process:
Under-curing will look grainy instead of smooth and glossy. The adhesive won’t bond properly, leading to wash-out.
Over-curing can lead to the adhesive burning, meaning it will go off-white in colour and cracks/pin pricks can appear on the surface. This ruins the flexibility and durability of the transfer.
7. Maintain Your Hardware Like Clockwork
Consistent maintenance is key to maximum uptime and print quality. Completing a nozzle check to ensure your print head has no blocked nozzles at the start of the day is essential to better print output and fewer wasted prints. Be sure to follow maintenance guidelines for curing ovens and powder systems too. Stick to a routine!
8. Power Of The Peel
Whether your film is hot peel or cold peel, we always recommend the same motion for removal. When peeling the print, hold the garment flat and peel in one smooth, fast motion. A slow or jerky peel can lead to partial adhesion or a ragged transfer edge.
