FAQ’s about Direct to Film (DTF)

More FAQ’s
  1. What is the necessary maintenance for a DTF printer?

A DTF printer requires frequent maintenance, ideally before and after each use. This type of printer should ideally be used daily to prevent clogs.

Important: If you anticipate the printer being unused for extended periods (e.g., regularly 5 days or more), an alternative printing system (such as toner-based transfer paper) should be seriously considered.

  2. Can I store DTF transfers for later use?

Yes, DTF transfers are excellent for storage. After curing the adhesive powder, the transfer is stable and can be stored or shipped, with a shelf life of at least 1 year.

Storage Tip: We recommend storing the transfers in airtight grip bags. This prevents them from becoming slightly tacky due to environmental factors when stored for a prolonged period. They are highly suitable for sale as individual transfers.

  3. What does the DTF powder do, and what type of ink is used?

    * DTF Powder: This is a solvent-free polymer adhesive. It ensures the final bond to the textile and is crucial for high washability.
    * DTF Ink: This is specialized ink (CMYK + White). The ink must be formulated to react perfectly with the adhesive powder, and the white layer must be printed on top of the wet CMYK layer without bleeding or smearing.

  4. Do I always need an automatic powder shaking machine for DTF?

No. For smaller volumes (less than approximately 5 meters of film), it is often more efficient to apply the powder manually to the prints and cure them in a dedicated DTF curing oven, rather than setting up an automatic powder machine.

  5. How is the washability and stretch of a DTF transfer?

The washability of DTF transfers is excellent. They withstand more than 50 wash cycles (40°C/104°F, no dryer/softener) without cracking or fading. The print is highly stretchable and features a soft hand-feel (comparable to digital screen-print transfers).

Quality Improvement: Washability can be further increased by post-pressing with TheMagicTouch T.Seal, a special sheet that helps press the print deeper into the fabric fibers.

  6. What is the cost of a DTF transfer?

The cost is variable, depending on the printer, film width, and ink consumption. As an indication, an A3 sheet with 20 chest logos costs approximately €1.20, which breaks down to about €0.06 per logo.

Note: This is an average example; actual cost per print may vary.

  7. Does the quality of the film matter in the DTF process?

Yes, the DTF film is a critical component for consistent results. Quality films (such as DTF Magic Film) offer excellent anti-static properties, minimal distortion when heated, and a reliable, smooth release of the transfer.
